Kurjey Lhakhang

Bumthang, Central Bhutan

BUILT : 1652, 1894 & 1900

Kurjey Lhakhang is a revered spiritual site with a rich history dating back to the 8th century. The complex comprises three main temples, surrounded by chortens and religious monuments. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche, the revered saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan, meditated in a cave here and left his body imprint on a rock, leading to the name “Kurjey,” meaning “body imprint.”

The oldest temple, Kurjey Lhakhang(1652), houses the sacred body imprint, while the Guru Lhakhang(1894) and Ka Gon Phur Sum Lhakhang(1900) complete the triad of spiritual structures. Pilgrims and visitors are drawn not only to the religious significance but also to the serene surroundings, making Kurjey Lhakhang a cultural gem and a testament to Bhutan’s deep spiritual roots.
