Thimphu Bhutan Festival

Paro, Thimphu, Punakha

7 Days 6 Nights

Description

The Thimphu Tshechu is an annual festival held in the courtyard of the Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. The festival is held in honor of Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rimpoche, who is revered as the second Buddha in Bhutan.

The Thimphu Tshechu is a four-day festival, and each day is dedicated to a different set of mask dances. The mask dances are performed by monks and lay people alike, and they represent different aspects of Buddhist teachings.

Day 1:

  • The festival begins with the opening ceremony, which is a colorful and festive event.
  • The first mask dance is the Guru Tshengye, which represents the eight manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava.
  • Other mask dances performed on the first day include the Drametse Nga Cham, which is a dance that depicts the battle between good and evil, and the Cham of the 21 Taras, which is a dance that honors the 21 Taras, who are female Buddhist deities.

Day 2:

  • The second day of the festival is dedicated to the Pelden Lhamo Cham, which is a dance that depicts the wrathful female deity Pelden Lhamo, who is the protector of Bhutan.
  • Other mask dances performed on the second day include the Ter Cham, which is a dance that depicts the discovery of hidden treasures, and the Yak Cham, which is a dance that represents the yak, which is an important animal in Bhutanese culture.

Day 3:

  • The third day of the festival is dedicated to the Guru Rinpoche Cham, which is a dance that celebrates the life and teachings of Guru Padmasambhava.
  • Other mask dances performed on the third day include the Atsara, which is a dance that depicts the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and the Singye Cham, which is a dance that represents the lion, which is a symbol of royalty and power in Bhutan.

Day 4:

  • The fourth and final day of the festival is dedicated to the closing ceremony, which is a joyous and celebratory event.
  • The final mask dance of the festival is the Tshechu, which is a dance that represents the victory of good over evil.

The Thimphu Tshechu is a unique and special event that offers visitors a glimpse into Bhutanese culture and traditions. The festival is a celebration of Buddhism, and it is a time for people to come together and enjoy each other’s company.

In addition to the mask dances, the Thimphu Tshechu also features a variety of other activities, such as folk singing and dancing, archery competitions, and traditional Bhutanese games.
